About the role
The Tax Experienced Manager, Core Tax Services advises clients on tax implications, evaluates and selects alternative actions to reduce tax burden and compliance costs, identifies methods of complying with tax regulations, and acts as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. This role involves applying knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizing and communicating potential risks, and making top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies. Additionally, the manager is a key member of the office/region leadership team, participates in marketing, networking, and business development, and maintains client relationships.
Responsibilities
- Tax Compliance
- Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensures self and client service teams comply with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual.
- Conducts top-level review of tax returns and resolves all issues with the client; involves specialists as necessary.
- Communicates with clients and Assurance any issues identified in tax accrual reviews.
- Manages client relationships and expectations according to project plans.
- Plans and reviews the tax process and procedures to include budgeting and staffing, monitoring engagement processes, and managing out-of-scope activities.
- Manages billing and collections, including timely billing and collection of accounts receivable.
- Identifies and conducts research on complex issues, and reports findings to the client.
- Trains managers/staff on research skills and helps frame tax issues for analysis.
- Manages written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with minimal assistance.
- Implements applicable Firm strategies and manages client expectations.
- Tax Consulting
- Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing taxes, while managing risk.
- Monitors implementation of work plans for tax consulting projects and ensures they are efficiently and effectively conducted.
- Manages written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with little or no assistance.
- Implements applicable Firm strategies and manages client expectations.
- Tax Specialization
- Develops an in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding one or more areas of taxation, such as individual, corporate, property, sales, corporate, pass-through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits.
- Organizes and conducts effective external CPE training sessions in area of specialization, involving Firm specialists, at least once per year.
- Trains and mentors managers/seniors/associates on specialization areas.
- Strategy Development
- Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve client, Firm, or Firm personnel positions, such as reducing taxes or expenses or providing non-tax benefits.
- Researches and implements tax strategies, including experimenting with promising new strategies and ideas.
- Makes suggestions to improve previous work products or approaches.
- Presents complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
- Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects.
- Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments.
- Trains associates and seniors on using current software tools.
- Acts as a Career Advisor to associates and senior associates.
- Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates.
- Bachelor's degree, required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics, preferred.
- Masters in Accountancy or Taxation, preferred.
- Six (6) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience, required.
- Prior supervisory experience, required.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties, preferred.
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent ("EA") (or the equivalent of one of these designations), required.
- Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role, preferred.
- Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, preferred.
- Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software, preferred.
- Superior verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills as well as decision-making skills.
- Capacity to work well in a team environment.
- Capable of developing and managing a team of tax professionals.
- Capable of composing written tax advice.
- Capable of effectively developing and maintaining client relationships.
