Tax Experienced Manager, Corporate/ASC 740 Focus
About the role
The Tax Experienced Manager, Core Tax Services advises clients on tax implications, evaluates alternative actions to reduce tax burden and compliance costs, identifies methods to comply with tax regulations, and acts as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. This role also involves serving as a key member of the office/region leadership team, participating in marketing and business development, and maintaining client relationships.
Responsibilities
- Tax Compliance
- Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens.
- Resolves tax issues with clients and involves specialists as necessary.
- Communicates with clients and Assurance about issues identified in tax accrual reviews.
- Manages client relationships and expectations according to project needs.
- Plans and reviews the tax process, including budgeting and staffing, monitoring engagement processes, and managing out-of-scope activities.
- Manages client inquiries from federal and state agencies.
- Reviews tax provisions and applies ASC 740 and Firm policies.
- Trains managers and staff on research skills.
- Applies Firm strategies and manages client expectations.
- Tax Consulting
- Develops and recommends methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing taxes, while managing risk.
- Monitors implementation of work plans for tax consulting projects.
- Manages written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies.
- Implements applicable Firm strategies.
- Tax Specialization
- Develops in-depth understanding of one or more areas of taxation, such as individual, corporate, property, sales, corporate, pass-through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits.
- Organizes and conducts effective external CPE training sessions in area of specialization.
- Trains and mentors managers/seniors/associates on specialization areas.
- Strategy Development
- Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve client, Firm, or Firm personnel positions.
- Researches and implements tax strategies, including experimenting with promising new strategies and ideas.
- Makes suggestions for improving previous work products or approaches.
- Presents complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics, preferred; Master's in Accountancy or Taxation, preferred.
- Six (6) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience, required.
- Prior supervisory experience, required.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties, preferred.
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) (or the equivalent of one of these designations), required.
- Software proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, preferred.
- Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software, preferred.
- Superior verbal and written communication skills, strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, and decision-making abilities.
- Capable of working well in a team environment and developing and managing a team of tax professionals.
- Capable of composing written tax advice and developing and maintaining client relationships.
