About the role

KPMG is seeking a Tax Associate to join our State & Local Tax practice.

Responsibilities

  • Assist multi-state companies with state and local tax issues (income/franchise, sales/use, excise, and property tax), including compliance, consulting, planning, and controversies.
  • Assist clients with business tax planning transactions and mergers and acquisitions, including identifying and developing state and local tax issues and savings opportunities that arise from legal entity changes/transactions.
  • Research and draft state and local tax technical memoranda.
  • Assist with M&A transactions involving acquisitions and dispositions of equity interests (e.g., corporate stock, LLC membership interests, etc.) and/or business assets.
  • Supervise the work of shared services team members and interns; assist in handling notices, including coordination of shared resources.
  • Analyze, prepare, and review tax workpapers and returns, estimated payments, and extensions; stay current on state and local tax legislative, judicial, and administrative developments.
  • Build capabilities in key technologies that enable tax professionals for client service delivery, such as artificial intelligence (AI), Alteryx, Power BI, and more.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to develop and sustain excellent client relationships.

Requirements

  • Must be pursuing or have obtained within the past 12 months a Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in accounting, finance, taxation, mathematics, economics, information technology, data and analytics, engineering (financial, industrial, or systems), or an equivalent program from an accredited college or university.
  • Must be pursuing the state-specific education requirements to be a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the principal place of business (the state in which the office is located), with completion of required academic credits prior to the start date.
  • Preferred GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Coursework or minor in information systems, software engineering, computer science, or data and analytics preferred.
  • Strong tax research skills.
  • Strong technical, business acumen, critical thinking, and agility skills. Demonstrated ability to excel and drive strategic outcomes in a dynamic, evolving environment.
  • Demonstrated quality service mindset, strong technical aptitude, and ability to learn and navigate technologies such as AI, Alteryx, Power BI, MS Office Applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook), and apply emerging technologies to enhance tax processes and insights.
  • Excellent communication, time management, and leadership skills; feedback-oriented and resourceful in delivering high-quality work.
  • Must reside within a reasonably commutable distance to the office and be able to travel to reasonably commutable work locations using a personal vehicle or public transportation.
  • Ability to travel and/or work on-site at client premises as needed, sometimes with relatively short notice.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without the need for employment-based visa sponsorship now or in the future. KPMG will not sponsor applicants for U.S. work visa status for this opportunity.
