Responsibilities
- Directs batching, melting, and forming operations to meet plant goals regarding safety, quality, production, costs, productivity, housekeeping, and employee relations.
- Coordinates and directs production activities of the batch plant, tanks, baths, and lehrs.
- Makes decisions and assumes responsibility for meeting unit goals.
- Reviews and analyzes unit production and quality reports, taking corrective action as necessary within established operating parameters and procedures.
- Maintains close communications with the Wareroom, Quality Control, and other staff functions to ensure efficient control of operations and improve performance.
- Makes recommendations to the Manager, Float Process regarding new methods, new equipment, organization, and general improvement of the Department and glass quality.
- Completes a daily inspection of the tank refractory structure to determine its condition.
- Coordinates the ordering of materials, supplies, and equipment used in the process, directing major or new items to the Manager for approval.
- Determines areas of least efficient operation and most penalizing to quality, developing new methods or changes to equipment for general improvement.
- Administers a positive training and safety program to ensure maximum performance.
- Creates an atmosphere of confidence, mutual trust, and respect with tank employees.
Qualifications
- A B.S. degree in glass, ceramic, or chemical engineering, with a minimum of two years' experience in production or process engineering preferred; equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Desired but not required: general knowledge of float glass batch, melting, and forming processes.
- Demonstrated leadership, judgment, administrative ability, and flexibility to handle rapidly changing conditions.
