Systems Safety Engineer Lead - Level 3 or 4 (AHT)
This position is 100% on-site in Chandler, AZ and requires U.S. citizenship. Relocation assistance is not available. Travel is required, up to 10% of the time.

Northrop Grumman’s Space Sector is seeking a Systems Safety Engineer Lead to join our team dedicated to keeping complex systems safe to manufacture, test, and operate. You will define and evaluate safety requirements, ensure implementation of critical safety features, and communicate with colleagues, customers, users, and other stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Lead a small team of System Safety engineers in defining, implementing, and verifying System Safety requirements to ensure inherent risks are mitigated.
- Apply the systems engineering process to define and verify launch vehicle and ground support equipment requirements to ensure safe operations.
- Conduct system safety analyses to architect and implement a safe and robust system.
- Understand the entire mission, including the launch vehicle, payload, ground support equipment, range infrastructure, and safety interfaces.
- Analyze how different components, subsystems, systems, and the integrated launch vehicle function and interact, with a focus on System Safety.
- Interact with key internal and external customers and partners regarding system safety topics.
- Support launch vehicle design and development to ensure customer and internal goals for safety, mission success, and performance are met.
- Analyze and explain launch vehicle designs to external customers to demonstrate compliance with applicable safety requirements for design, build, and test.
- Interface with customer safety and launch integration personnel and support ground operations and launch mission working groups as requested.
- Analyze integration and test processes to demonstrate customer and internal requirements are met for both safety and mission success at launch sites or Chandler, AZ facilities.
- Review product systems associated with support equipment and facilities, functional specifications, and operations to establish safety requirements for assigned systems.
- Independently analyze and recommend safety criteria in system design, equipment, and procedures to control or eliminate hazards.
- Develop safety documents to support customer and test/operational range requirements.
- Perform audits of operational areas and report effectiveness of the system safety program.
- Participate in accident investigations involving damage to products or related facilities and assist in identifying causes and corrective actions.
- Evaluate the interrelationship of system safety requirements and other aspects of concept design and development to ensure the most cost-effective program.
This position is contingent upon capturing program award(s) and obtaining and maintaining associated business and/or customer funding. Continued employment is subject to obtaining and maintaining required clearances and program access.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math).
- U.S. citizenship is required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Secret security clearance.
- Experience with launch vehicle or similar system design, testing, or mission operations.
- Knowledge of the systems engineering discipline and its application for system safety.
- Knowledge of RCC-319, RCC-324, SSCMAN 91-710, and MIL-STD-882.
Qualifications
Level 3: Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of related engineering experience; OR a Master’s degree in STEM with 3 years of related experience, or 1 year of experience with a PhD.
Level 4: Bachelor’s degree with 8 years of related engineering experience; OR a Master’s degree in STEM with 6 years of related engineering experience, or a PhD in STEM with 1 year of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active U.S. Government Secret clearance.
- At least 2 years of experience leading small teams.
- Experience forming and executing schedules and budgets.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently.
- Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex ideas and reach decision milestones.
- Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) experience in CAMEO.
- Experience with tailoring and implementing FAA, RCC-319, RCC-324, SSCMAN 91-710, and/or MIL-STD-882 content.
Pay
Primary Level Salary Range: $89,400.00 - $134,200.00
Secondary Level Salary Range: $111,700.00 - $167,500.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline. Base salary offers consider the scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's experience, education, skills, and current market conditions. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
