Systems PhD - Software Engineer
About the role
The Database Engine team at Databricks is seeking individuals who are passionate about database systems, storage systems, distributed systems, language design, and performance optimization. We are looking for candidates with a PhD in databases or systems who are motivated by delivering customer value and impact.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement query compilation & optimization
- Design and implement distributed query execution and scheduling
- Design and implement vectorized engine execution
- Design and implement data security solutions
- Design and implement resource management systems
- Design and implement transaction coordination mechanisms
- Design and implement efficient storage structures (encoding, indexes)
- Design and implement automatic physical data optimization
Requirements
We are looking for candidates with a PhD in databases or systems. Experience in the following areas is preferred:
- Databases
- Systems
- Distributed Systems
- Languages
- Performance Optimization
Qualifications
Must have:
- A strong background in computer science
- Experience with distributed systems
- Knowledge of database systems
- Experience with performance optimization

Pay
The pay range for this role is $160,000 - $240,000 annually. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors including job-related skills, depth of experience, relevant certifications and training, and specific work location. Databricks anticipates utilizing the full width of the range.
Schedule
The schedule for this role is typically full-time.
