Systems Engineering Section Manager

Leidos is seeking a Systems Engineering Section Manager to join our Huntsville, Alabama office. This role involves daily management decisions within the Systems Engineering and Integration Branch, supporting a diverse team focused on systems engineering for Space Platforms and Kinetic Effects Business Area applications. The candidate will balance technical commitments with section management responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership to 4–8 direct reports in a matrixed organization, mentoring staff across varying programs, experience levels, and specialties (e.g., verification, requirements development).
• Lead by example in Leidos Values, ethics, work quality, and discipline while keeping management informed of critical issues.
• Participate in proposal and business development opportunities and develop/maintain standardized tools and processes.
• Perform management activities, including:
  • Tracking long-term staffing and career development for direct reports.
  • Regular check-ins with direct reports and reporting status to the Branch Manager.
  • Approving equipment and software requests for direct reports.
  • Interviewing candidates and contributing to hiring decisions.
  • Onboarding new employees, including equipment requests and office space allocation.
  • Conducting performance appraisals and providing coaching.
• Support multiple tasks in parallel, lead team environments, and communicate effectively with management, employees, coworkers, and customers.
• Maintain high-quality products that exceed customer expectations through self-motivation and organization.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent from an ABET-accredited university with 5+ years of experience, or an MS with 2+ years.
• Knowledge of complex engineering practices and processes, including the product development cycle through qualification and production.
• Experience deriving and managing requirements for complex electrical, electro-mechanical, mechanical, and software systems.
• Experience creating verification and test plans and coordinating system integration and test activities.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in a team environment, including leading and conducting Technical Design Reviews.
• Capability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
• Residency in the North Alabama area or willingness to relocate.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master of Science in Systems Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
• Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering tools (e.g., DOORS, JAMA, Cameo/MagicDraw).
• Demonstrated experience leading a team of engineers.
• Ability to accurately estimate engineering effort (hours) for Systems Engineering tasks.
• Understanding of DoD and/or NASA acquisition processes and methods.
• Experience supporting DoD and/or NASA programs or commercial aerospace hardware development projects.
• Experience working in multi-company and multi-organizational development teams.
• OMG Certified System Modeler Professional (OCSMP) or INCOSE Systems Engineering Professional (SEP) certification (ASEP or CSEP).

Pay

Pay Range: $107,900.00 – $195,050.00. The Leidos pay range is a general guideline and not a guarantee of compensation. Additional factors considered include job responsibilities, education, experience, skills, internal equity, and market data.
