Systems Engineer
About the role

BWXT’s Enrichment Operations (EO) in Oak Ridge focus on the engineering, fabrication, and testing of advanced gas centrifuge machines. This site accelerates next-generation technology from development to production readiness, supporting the national mission to restore a domestic uranium enrichment supply chain for US defense and naval nuclear propulsion.
Responsibilities
- Serve as system owner or subject matter expert for assigned systems.
- Develop and maintain system documentation, including requirements, design descriptions, drawings, and configuration records.
- Ensure systems operate in compliance with engineering standards, safety directives, regulatory requirements, and quality procedures.
- Perform system health assessments and develop corrective action plans.
- Lead root-cause analyses and provide technical troubleshooting support.
- Support projects by developing technical requirements and participating in design reviews.
- Conduct engineering analyses, modeling, and calculations.
- Review and approve engineering change packages and technical procurement documents.
- Collaborate with Safety, Quality, and Regulatory teams to ensure compliance.
- Perform readiness reviews, system testing, and commissioning activities.
- Support long-term system lifecycle planning and technology modernization.
- Drive continuous improvement through engineering and reliability methodologies.
Qualifications / Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, nuclear, chemical, or related).
- 3–5+ years of engineering experience in industrial or regulated environments.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with system operation, troubleshooting, and evaluation.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in engineering or related field.
- 5–10+ years experience in nuclear, DOE, defense, or advanced manufacturing.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure.
- Experience with reliability engineering and performance monitoring tools.
- Familiarity with DOE directives, nuclear safety, and configuration management.
- Experience with capital projects, system upgrades, and change management.
Pay
The base salary range for this position in Tennessee (US-TN) at the start of employment is expected to be between $76,000 and $119,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
