Systems Administrator
US Citizenship is required. Candidates must be able to qualify for a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance and be SAP program eligible. This in‑person position is located in Arlington, VA. Toyon Research Corporation is seeking a Systems Administrator to join the IT team, supporting a small, collaborative group responsible for the health, security, and availability of our systems. The role is hands‑on and customer‑facing, requiring the ability to wear multiple hats, troubleshoot a wide range of issues, and engage directly with internal customers with a service‑oriented mindset. Responsibilities include remediating security findings, maintaining systems, and ensuring uptime across servers, storage, and endpoints, with an emphasis on continuous learning through formal training and self‑teaching.
Responsibilities
- Remediate security findings and vulnerabilities across the environment.
- Perform system maintenance and troubleshoot servers, storage, and endpoints.
- Monitor systems and maintain availability/uptime.
- Build and configure Windows and Linux virtual machines for various purposes.
- Apply operating system security hardening techniques (Windows, Linux), including STIGs and other industry standards.
- Support day‑to‑day IT customer service needs across the organization.
Requirements
- Associate’s degree in computer science or related field.
- 2+ years of experience with both Windows and Linux systems.
- IAT Level II certification required (Security+ CE at minimum).
- Experience with virtualization technologies and hypervisors (e.g., VMware, Hyper‑V).
- Understanding of basic networking concepts (DNS, network segmentation, basic routing).
- Experience with Windows 11, Windows Server, Active Directory, and Group Policy Management.
- Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and its derivatives/offshoots.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable in a customer‑facing capacity.
- Willingness and ability to work collaboratively on a small team, covering a broad range of responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Bash, PowerShell) for automating security tasks.
- Familiarity with Ansible.
- Familiarity with backend storage appliances and storage management (NAS products).
- Familiarity with Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and Zero/Thin client architecture.
Pay
The annual base compensation range for this Security Specialist position is $110,000 to $150,000, exclusive of overtime, bonus, and benefits. Compensation will be determined based on education, work experience, applicable knowledge, skills, training, and other factors.
