System Safety Engineer III

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which includes Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This position sits within the Safety, Quality and Mission Assurance organization, focusing on defining, monitoring, and assessing processes that guide Blue Origin’s design, manufacturing, and operations. Responsibilities include system safety engineering, reliability, environmental health and safety, product integrity, and certification.

About the role

As a System Safety Engineer, you will work on space vehicles and in-space systems, collaborating with systems engineering teams to define and verify compliance with safety and reliability requirements. You will identify design improvement opportunities, minimize risk to people and property, and increase mission success probability. Your responsibilities will include leading and performing safety analyses to identify hazards, causes, controls, mitigations, and risk characterization. You will work directly with engineers, program management, and customers to support human spaceflight missions, including returning humans to the Moon and extending human presence beyond Earth.

Relocation provided. Travel expected up to 20% of the time.

Responsibilities

• Perform and lead engineering activities including Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Preliminary Hazard Assessment (PHA), Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA), Hazard Reports, Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analyses (FMECA), reliability analysis, and developing mitigation plans.
• Develop plans and coordinate completion of system and subsystem safety analysis, providing review, guidance, and expertise of safety analysis products.
• Ensure traceability between system and subsystem functions, requirements, and safety artifacts.
• Support verification and validation of safety and reliability requirements.
• Mentor and provide technical guidance to other engineers across the program and company.
• Collaborate across systems to develop best practices and find opportunities for common processes across programs.

Requirements

• B.S. degree in aerospace engineering, systems engineering, or related field.
• 5+ years of System Safety or Systems Engineering experience performing activities such as requirements definition, requirements traceability, functional decomposition, integration, verification, and validation.
• In-depth experience with performing safety analyses on safety-critical systems including: Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Preliminary Hazard Assessment (PHA), Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA), Hazard Reports, Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analyses (FMECA), reliability analysis, and mitigation plans.
• Ability to lead and coordinate safety analysis products across stakeholders and experts from varying engineering fields to produce safety and reliability products.
• Strong safety and mission assurance fundamentals.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate technical information effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience performing system safety and/or reliability analyses on satellites or human-rated in-space systems.
• Experience performing compliance assessment of system safety processes and products against external standards including Range Safety, NASA, FAA, MIL-STD-882, or ARP-4761.
• Experience with certification of human-rated space systems.
• Process ownership and maintenance experience.

Pay

Base pay range for WA applicants: $121,023.00 - $169,432.20. Other site ranges may differ.

• Blue’s Standard Background Check.
• Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) background check if the role requires access to a military installation.
• For drivers operating Commercial Motor Vehicles (GVW/GVWR ≥ 10,001 lbs. or transporting hazardous materials), additional Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations may apply, including drug and alcohol testing, vehicle inspection requirements, and CDL requirements (if applicable).
• For certain roles, the ability to obtain and maintain a Merchant Mariner Credential, including pre-employment and random drug testing, as well as a DOT physical.
