Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
Switcher Responsibilities
- Moves trailers on property as directed by customer personnel or systems.
- Verifies seals and performs any load status yard checks as required by facility.
- Performs trailer safety checks including, but not limited to, sliding tandem axles (if required).
- Red Tags trailers if needed.
- Obey any and all applicable traffic laws while conducting its operations on behalf of the customer.
- Obey all facility traffic and safety rules as required by specific facilities.
- Adhere to appropriate training records and sign off procedures as required by each facility.
- Participate in continuous improvement processes.
- Maintain an effective Preventative Maintenance Inspection (PMI) schedule for equipment.
Mentor Responsibilities
- Engage with new associates prior to their first day.
- Meet with new associates daily before start-up during training.
- Coordinate onboarding which includes acclimating to the team, site tour, introductions to key FHI leaders and customer contacts.
- Beyond initial training, conduct EHS ride along audits weekly for at least four weeks.
- Ensure new associates are familiar with the yard.
- Ensure new associates are familiar with and understand the operation of all door latches within the yard.
- Ensure new associates understand all safety protocols.
Physical Requirements
- Warehouse work environment with varying temperatures, at both hot and cold extremes.
- Must be able to operate a Switching Truck safely.
- Steel toes safety shoes are required.
- Expected to work productively and safely.
- Must pass pre-employment drug screen and background check.
- Safe driving record: No DUI, DWI or impaired driving within last 7 years.
- No more than 3 points on driving record.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Comfortable working in all weather conditions.
- Use of standard office equipment in typical office environment/conditions.
Qualifications
- Education: Not a requirement for success in this role.
- Experience: Experience working with switching equipment and backing trailers.
- Experience with leading a team to drive results.
- Experience with performing the functions of the job for Spotter/Yard Switcher position in a distribution setting.
- Experience performing safety checks and preventative maintenance inspections of switching equipment.
- No more than 3 attendance points.
- No more than 1 at fault safety incident within last 12 months AND less than 4 Safety points.
- No behavior related disciplinary actions within last 12 months.
- Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of Spotter/Yard Switcher position, Basic math skills, Ability to read, write, and understand English.
