Switchgear Electrical Engineer
Under the direction of shop management and Engineering, the electrical engineer uses engineering principles and design software to design, develop, and maintain electrical control systems and components focusing on economy, safety, reliability, quality, and sustainability.
Responsibilities
- Electrical Design (90% of duties)
- Perform design work for projects utilizing principles of mechanical or electrical engineering.
- Utilize computer software, drawings, and other tools to perform engineering tasks.
- Coordinate manufacturing, installation, maintenance support documentation, and testing activities to ensure compliance with specifications, codes, and design requirements.
- Establish construction, manufacturing, or installation standards or specifications by performing detailed calculations.
- Inspect completed installations and observe operations to ensure conformance to design and equipment.
- Review drawings to ensure technical and regulatory compliance.
- Provide information and technical support to internal and external customers that meet customer and company expectations.
- Review jobs to ensure they meet or exceed customer expectations.
- Coordinate with customers regarding specification/design questions and clarifications.
- Work with Purchasing and Vendors to receive quotes and lead times to complete design.
- Understand basic electrical and control system principles and read electrical schematics, three-line diagrams, and control/communication diagrams.
- Coordinate multiple group efforts within the company to achieve objectives.
- Ensure HSEQ, DOT, OSHA compliance and maintain an excellent safety record.
- Use AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
- Apply math skills and excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Identify processes needing improvement and recommend improvements.
- Maintain electrical equipment.
- Follow directions regarding assignments and customer expectations on projects.
- Understand and follow company policies, state, federal, and safety policies.
- Work overtime (nights and weekends) to complete jobs in progress.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Electrical Testing (10% of duties)
- Perform power testing of protective relay panels, medium voltage switchgear line-ups, test communication, and HMI components on the relay panel.
- Test switchboards, automatic transfer switches, and other power distribution components.
- Review project specifications and implement testing procedures to comply with project requirements.
- Review test plans of large projects against schematics.
- Maintain test folders for all projects with relevant test reports, test drawings, and test pictures.
- Lead problem-solving initiatives to analyze quality failures and drive quality improvements (e.g., improve testing efficiency to reduce time required).
Requirements
- Associate’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience, or a minimum of 5 years of combined experience.

Pay
$40.9995 to $57.3995 USD per hour (depending on experience).
Schedule
- Full-Time, Non-Union
- Occasional overtime (nights and weekends) required to complete jobs in progress.
- Travel: Up to 5%
