Swiss and Lathe Machine Setup Operator {H}

Responsibilities

• Operate Machines:
  • Load starting material into machine and unload machined part from machine
  • Deburr parts as necessary for inspection and safety
  • Perform daily housekeeping around machine and daily maintenance checks
  • Adjust tool offsets and other machine offsets such as fixture offsets, cutter comp, etc.
• Set-Up Jobs:
  • For non-complex machining operations, install and align holding fixtures and accessories on machines per green folder instructions
  • Align and secure cutting tools into tool holders and then install tool assemblies on machines per tool sheet
  • Retrieve CNC program, ensure revision is correct, and download to machine
  • Establish the machining offsets (G54, etc.)
  • Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjust set-up as required to make part within specification
  • Document results and obtain first-piece stamp for operation

  Multitasking machine set-up experience a plus.

• Tooling:
  • Recognize tool wear and adjust tool offsets as necessary
  • Identify and build tooling according to the tool sheet, establish tool heights
  • Identify correct tool versus the tool sheet and change the tool in the machine
• CNC Program:
  • Read CNC program line-by-line to follow tool paths
• Manual Inspection:
  • Use standard hand tools such as vernier calipers, micrometers, and hard gages to ensure parts are fabricated within specifications
  • Use specialty inspection devices (e.g., vision system) required in each machining cell
• Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM):
  • Load part onto CMM and operate CMM to ensure parts are fabricated within specifications
• Quality System & Documentation:
  • Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and quality plans to understand inspection requirements
  • Fill out quality system paperwork and enter data into computer as necessary
• Planning & Scheduling:
  • Operate more than one machine at the same time, as required
• Training:
  • Train other employees on the basics of operating equipment on which the employee is fully competent
• Troubleshooting & Problem Solving:
  • Notify more senior machining employees, engineers, or supervisors when problems arise

Requirements

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED); Vocational Technical High School or Community College Advanced Manufacturing Certificate graduate preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
• Ability to present numerical data effectively and write routine correspondence
• Ability to speak effectively to communicate with other employees of the organization
• Ability to apply concepts such as decimals, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide
• Ability to interpret bar and line graphs
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
• Ability to identify problems in a timely manner and resolve or notify a more senior employee
• Ability to work well in group situations
• Basic computer skills
