Swing Driver - CDL

About the role

The Swing driver position at LRS is responsible for servicing customer accounts throughout the day. This role involves collecting and hauling waste, recycling materials, or containers to a disposal site or recycling plant as directed by dispatch. The position may perform as a Container, Commercial, Roll Off, or Residential Driver as needed.

Responsibilities

• Complete work assignments in a safe and efficient manner to avoid damage and accidents.
• Operate vehicle in accordance with Lakeshore Waste Services safety and Life Critical Rules, OSHA (Occupational and Safety Health Act), and DOT (Department of Transportation) requirements.
• Perform pre- and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicle and document checks using the standard DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report).
• Immediately report all unsafe situations or service-related issues to Route Manager or Dispatch.
• Attend and participate in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings as required by LRS or directed by the Route Manager.
• Notify Route Manager of any incidents, accidents, injuries, or property damage.
• Notify Route Manager or Dispatch of service interruptions, including blocked containers, closed lots, streets, alleyways, or potential safety hazards.
• Communicate customer requests to Dispatch or Route Manager.
• Maintain and update driver log sheets throughout the day.
• Communicate professionally with customers.
• Keep commercial vehicle clean and free of trash/debris.
• Follow route assignments as directed and complete end of day documentation and check out process.
• Perform all duties as scheduled by Route Manager or Dispatch and assist other drivers as directed to meet customer needs.
• Under the direction of Management, coordinate and lead a team of drivers, schedule and make possible route changes as needed, assure company policies are followed, and provide additional training as needed.
• Onboard and train new and existing drivers.
• Help coordinate scheduled shifts and work to cover if there is a call-in/no show.
• Help track and minimize overtime of employees and help implement improvements in work efficiencies.
• Work with management team to implement quarterly goals (key indicators) used to track the efficiency/profitability of the company.
• Help coordinate, facilitate, and optimize routes and coverage at all times.
• Evaluate customer support and problem-solving to find solutions to customer issues.
• Respond positively to unpredictable situations or problems that can occur throughout their work responsibilities.

Requirements

• Legally eligible to work in the United States.
• At least 18 years of age.
• Valid Class B CDL.
• Valid DOT medical card or obtain prior to hire.
• No more than 3 moving violations within the last 2 years.
• No DUI’s or OVI’s within the last 5 years or 2 in the last 10 years.
• No license suspensions within the last 2 years.
• Successfully complete pre-employment testing.
• Able to read and speak the English language well enough to communicate, understand, and respond to questions, directions, traffic signs, signals, and safety training.

Physical Demands / Environmental Factors

• Sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.
• Occasionally stand and walk.
• Frequent lifting and/or moving up to 10 pounds.
• Manual dexterity required to operate controls on truck.
