Swim Lesson Instructor

About the Role

This position ensures the safety, well-being, and enjoyment of all participants in swim classes. The instructor teaches personal safety, personal growth, stroke development, water games and sports, and rescue through explanation, demonstration, and individualized correction. Swim Instructors plan, prepare, and maintain a safe, fun learning environment for all swimmers.

Responsibilities

• Maintain constant supervision and control of the class at all times.
• Provide encouragement and correct swim strokes to prevent bad habits.
• Demonstrate skills in the water for every class.
• Enforce pool rules courteously and firmly.
• Prepare class session plans, participant record sheets, skill evaluations, and parent communications.
• Administer and collect parental evaluations of the class.
• Attend weekly staff meetings and in-service trainings.
• Arrive 15 minutes before class to set up equipment and clean up afterward.
• Assist lifeguards on deck until all participants have left the pool area.
• Assess entry and exit skill levels of all participants.
• Work with parents to schedule swim programs around pool availability.
• Develop lesson plans based on class ability, size, and developmental level.
• Evaluate pool environment (water quality, temperature, cleanliness, equipment safety) before class.
• Determine appropriate class size based on swimmers' abilities.
• Identify if a child requires a special needs class and communicate this to the Lead Swim Instructor or Aquatics Director.
• Stay updated on pool schedules and adjust class schedules as needed.
• Demonstrate strong stroke knowledge and communicate effectively with swimmers of all ages and skill levels.
• Utilize the entire pool for class activities and safely enter/exit the pool multiple times per session.

Requirements

• Current YMCA or American Red Cross swimming instructor certification.
• Current CPR, AED, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certifications.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience working with children.
• Minimum of 1 year of experience working in a pool environment.
