Responsibilities

• Provide aquatic instruction using YMCA Youth Swim Lessons guidelines to individuals enrolled in swim classes.
• Promote the general safety of all swimmers under the supervision of the Aquatic Director.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 16.
• Must be able to frequently perform physical activities such as climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, and communicating verbally.
• Ability to demonstrate a high level of maturity, patience, dependability, and the desire to work with all ages, especially children.
• Must be able to visually see all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
• Must be able to adequately hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
• Must possess the ability to remain alert and maintain concentration for long periods of time to ensure safety of participants.
• Must demonstrate the ability to make independent and sound decisions in a rapidly changing environment.
• Must possess the ability to show initiative in the absence of supervision.
• Must be able to relate to and work with diverse groups of people in a friendly and consistent manner.
• Maintain a neat and professional appearance.

Essential Functions

• Lead the instruction of participants and effectively supervise and motivate class participants to reach their individual goals.
• Maintain a working knowledge of and ability to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
• Instruct and evaluate swim lesson participants in accordance with YMCA guidelines, preparing lesson plans accordingly.
• Build effective, authentic relationships with students and parents.
• Convey information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate.
• Submit completed records on time (i.e. attendance, progress reports).
• Organize and put away needed class equipment.
• Report any facility or equipment irregularities to supervisor in writing.
• Ensure the safety of participants by following and enforcing all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.
• Report all incidents/accidents on the appropriate form and provide to supervisor within 24 hours of event.
• Work a schedule that reflects the needs of the branch.
