About the role
The Swim Instructor supports the Y’s mission by maintaining a supportive, positive atmosphere and providing direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swim classes.
Responsibilities
- Instruct swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, using prepared lesson plans, and support participants in achieving their goals.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with volunteers, members, participants, and colleagues; foster connections among families and encourage caregiver involvement.
- Communicate aquatics program details and schedules; refer participants to other programs as appropriate.
- Maintain records such as attendance and progress reports.
- Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and emergency procedures; complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Organize and store class equipment; report damaged equipment.
- Train and supervise class aides as assigned.
Requirements
- At least 16 years of age.
- Ability to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent.
- CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certifications.
- Completion of YMCA e-learning courses: Intro to the Y’s Cause and Culture, Living our Cause, and I Hear You: Service with Care within the first 30 days of employment.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
- Ability to lift equipment and small to average-sized children.
Employment Requirements
- Pass a pre-employment background check, including criminal record, drug screening, motor vehicle record (MVR), and reference checks.
- Must be legally eligible to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
