About the role
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Swim Instructors are responsible for providing high-quality swim instruction to individuals of various ages and skill levels. The instructor will promote water safety, skill development, and a positive learning environment while fostering a love for swimming and physical fitness.
Responsibilities
- Instructs aquatic programs in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly, and supports members and program participants in achieving their goals while working to ensure a diverse and inclusive culture at the Y.
- Develops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, members, and program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourages parent or caregiver involvement.
- Communicate with supervisor, staff, members, guests, and volunteers in a clear, concise and positive manner while using Listen First skills.
- Congratulates program participants and families to the other programs.
- Maintains records as required (e.g., attendance, progress reports).
- Maintain accountability for assigned programs by attending all scheduled shifts and actively securing coverage for shifts that cannot be attended.
- Organizes and puts away the program equipment needed. Reports damaged equipment.
- Reports damaged equipment.
- Fulfills all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Understands, supports and is committed to the YMCA cause and our role in the community as a leader in Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. Actively participates in team meetings as assigned.
- Act as a positive role model while implementing YMCA character development and following the four core values of Caring, Honesty, Responsibility, and Respect.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Y’s leadership team including the Director of Aquatics, Director of Operations, and/or President and CEO.

Requirements
- CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification within 6 months
- Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards
- Must be at least 16 years of age
