Description

Under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor or Aquatics Coordinator, provides high-quality swim instruction to participants of all ages and skill levels using established curriculum and instructional standards. The Swim Instructor's primary responsibility is lesson delivery, class management, and participant skill development, with safety oversight integrated into all instructional activities.

Examples of Duties

  • Instructs group and semi-private swim lessons in accordance with approved swim lesson curriculum, emphasizing water safety, stroke fundamentals, and skill progression.
  • Plans and delivers structured, age-appropriate lessons that promote confidence, proper technique, and measurable participant involvement.
  • Maintains classes effectively by maintaining appropriate control, engagement, and instructional pacing for participants of varying abilities.
  • Observes, evaluates, and documents participant progress; communicates feedback and skill development updates to participants and parents or guardians as appropriate.
  • Maintains a safe instructional environment by enforcing pool rules, safety standards, and City policies during lessons.
  • Monitors participants during instruction and responds promptly and appropriately to unsafe conditions or emergencies, including administering First Aid or CPR/AED when required.
  • Affixes instructional equipment; ensures teaching areas are clean, organized, and prepared for lessons.
  • Completes attendance records, skill assessments, and incident or accident reports as required.
  • Performs core aquatic safety and surveillance duties consistent with assigned instructional responsibilities, including guarding on deck or in the water as directed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • Knowledge of swim instruction techniques, stroke mechanics, and water safety principles.
    • Ability to teach and manage swim lesson classes for participants of varying ages, skill levels, and comfort in the water.
    • Strong communication, instructional, and customer service skills.
    • Ability to remain attentive, exercise sound judgment, and respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Requires ability to stand, stoop, reach, and bend.
  • Required mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate.
  • Requires ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Requires ability to lift, push, or pull.
  • May require water rescues, with First Aid and/or CPR/AED as needed.
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • May be required to use personal vehicle in the course of City employment.
  • May be required to work mornings, afternoons, evenings, and/or weekends.
