Responsibilities

  • Provide emotional and logistical support to patients and their loved ones during their final days.
  • Affirmatively ensure that VITAS patients have their affairs in order regarding finances, funeral arrangements, and other matters.
  • Navigate the grieving process for patients' loved ones.
  • Grant end-of-life wishes or simply listen to patients' stories at their bedside.
  • Make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and their families through large and small actions.

Requirements

  • Ability to travel as required.
  • Thorough knowledge of community resources or willingness to acquire such knowledge.
  • Knowledge of key psychosocial issues related to terminally ill patients and their families, including effective interventions.
  • Capacity to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills.
  • Ability to advocate for patients and families within the patient/family unit, within the interdisciplinary group, and with community agencies.
  • Provide emotional and psychological support, counseling, crisis intervention, bereavement support, and grief counseling.
  • Show empathy and compassion when dealing with seriously ill patients and their families.

Qualifications

  • Masters of Social Work from a Council on Social Work Education-accredited school, or equivalent experience where allowable by state regulations.
  • At least one year of social work experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience working with terminally ill patients and their families, preferred.
  • Experience providing counseling and support to patients and families.
