Surveyor

About the Role

This position oversees a variety of duties to facilitate pile driving and surveying for the construction of docks, mooring and breasting lines, chemical plant facilities, roads, building sites, bridges, and other structures. The incumbent supervises daily operations, ensures project completion according to company standards, and performs complex survey duties. Work is primarily located in the Southern Louisiana area, including Lake Charles and Baton Rouge, and requires out-of-town travel. Responsibilities

• Works with the Project Superintendent and jobsite crews to ensure accurate surveying for construction stakeout.
• Oversees existing site surveys, as-built surveys, and control line surveys to ensure project accuracy.
• Participates in pre-survey meetings with Project Managers and contractor representatives; assigns and monitors surveyor’s work.
• Assembles field data, reduces field notes, and performs survey calculations.
• Gathers pertinent reference data before field surveys.
• Plots field data using survey computer programs, constructs maps, and prepares reports.
• Establishes control for alignment and benchmarks, making required line and elevation ties to existing centerlines and U.S.G.S. benchmarks.
• Conducts vertical control surveys for aerial surveys and determines elevations for various surfaces.
• Performs topographical and site surveys for the design and development of docks, buildings, roads, and bridges.
• Maintains records and prepares reports for project needs and future retention.
• Drives regular passenger vehicles to visit work locations and job sites.

Requirements

• B.S. Degree in Surveying or related discipline with a minimum of 3 years’ experience, or equivalent work experience as a Surveyor.
• Prior hands-on experience in heavy civil or marine construction is preferred.
• Working knowledge of project construction, principles of surveying, engineering and project standards, surveying software, state law regarding plats, property lines, survey monuments, and safety and environmental compliance.
• Strong knowledge of mathematics, survey computer programs, and survey computations; ability to record results accurately and legibly.
• Strong knowledge of mechanical drawing instruments, drafting nomenclature and symbols, and surveying instruments and GPS equipment.
• Ability to carry out written and oral directions.
• Ability to perform transit and level work, including the use of total station instruments for survey projects.
• Ability to reduce and plot field notes, make computations, and create engineering sketches, maps, and drawings.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
• Ability to travel out of town as needed.

• Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Capable of wearing and properly utilizing personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, and personal flotation devices (PFDs).
• Ability to walk, step, climb, or move between job site locations, including getting on and off work barges, boats, vessels, or dock facilities of varying heights.
• Capable of standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing, or sitting for long periods.
• Ability to work in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
• Ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to adapt to extreme temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure.
• Ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as directed.
• Capable of evacuating the work area promptly in an emergency.
