About the role
EAS is seeking a Surveying Aide to assist with a study monitoring juvenile salmonid outmigration through USACE dams using rotary screw traps. The position involves assisting on other EAS projects as needed.
Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively in teams to conduct fieldwork, generally within a 40-hour workweek, with occasional overtime.
- Travel highways, single lane roads, and forest roads in various conditions.
- Navigate unimproved shoreline areas by foot.
- Conduct fieldwork in diverse outdoor environments, including forests, rivers, streams, and lakes, often in remote locations.
- Work in inclement weather, such as rain, fog, or extreme temperatures, including driving in such conditions.
- Identify, sample, tag, and record relevant data for native and non-native fish species, with an emphasis on salmonid species.
- Maintain rotary screw traps, vehicles, and sampling gear.
Requirements
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information effectively.
- Ability to work 10+ hour days in diverse outdoor environments, including forests, rivers, streams, and lakes, often in remote locations.
- Ability to work in inclement weather, such as rain, fog, or extreme temperatures, including ability to drive in such conditions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and traverse uneven terrain.
- Proficient swimmer and able to operate in cold water conditions.
- Ability and willingness to adjust work locations, sampling methods, and schedules (including weekends and evenings) based on project priorities.
Qualifications
- Desired Qualifications: 1 year of experience in the fisheries field preferred. Graduated or currently enrolled in a university with a focus on fish and wildlife, biology, or ecology. Experience providing technical support related to production, research, operations or program administration efforts in laboratories, field, or other settings. Experience identifying and sampling native and nonnative fish species in the PNW, with an emphasis on salmonid species. Repairing and troubleshooting field gear (mechanical experience a plus). Experience in fish surveys and sampling techniques. Experience operating kayaks or inflatable boats (kayak/raft) in moving water.

Benefits
The pay range is $21.00-$23.00/hr., plus $5.09 in health and welfare dollars. There is no housing provided.
