Survey Technician - Transportation Generalist Senior

Location: Winona, MN

Full-time, unlimited position within the Transportation Department, District 6.

About the Role

Performs as survey lead worker in the absence of the crew lead. This role involves field and office survey activities, equipment maintenance, and communication with contractors, landowners, consultants, and supervisors.

Responsibilities

• Set up real-time kinematic global position systems or total stations.
• Perform data comparison from real-time kinematic global position systems or total stations.
• Assist survey lead in construction survey office activities.
• Perform set-up, calibration, use, and maintenance of survey equipment.
• Assist survey lead in field construction by creating and/or checking survey notes, recovering or establishing horizontal and vertical control, setting and marking stakes, and pounding hubs or setting right of way.
• Set up and operate global positioning systems.
• Assist with investigation and location of lot corners, monuments, and section corners.
• Communicate with contractors, landowners, consultants, and supervisors to report progress or review work assignments.
• Assist in performing 1st and 2nd order geodetic control surveys.
• Process geodetic control data and perform technical computations.
• Assist in preparing mapping and aero-triangulation projects.
• Perform routine maintenance/cleaning of stereo plotter instruments.
• Perform snow and ice duties such as maintaining roadways and preparing and inspecting winter equipment.
• Be immediately accessible by phone and able to report to work within one hour of being called.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Must possess a valid Class D driver’s license or an equivalent license from another state.
• Must obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no Air Brake Restriction and Tanker Endorsement within 6 months of initial placement into the position and maintain them as a condition of employment.
• Two years of experience performing surveys (e.g., land, location, construction, and/or geodetic control surveys), mapping, or related activities.
• OR one year of experience performing surveys (e.g., land, location, construction, and/or geodetic control surveys), mapping, or related activities, AND one year of experience in performing roadway inspection, design, or related activities.
• Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and maintain routine written logs and simple records.
• Subject to drug and alcohol testing, including pre-placement and random testing.
• Must be registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.

Education Substitution

A two-year Civil or Construction Technology Degree OR one of the following four-year degrees may substitute for one year of experience: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying/Geomatics; or equivalent. Transcripts must be submitted for education to be considered in lieu of work experience.

Additional Requirements

• Applicants may be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test with required scores of level 5 or higher in both sections.
• All candidates must pass a background investigation prior to employment, which may include SEMA4 Records Check, Criminal History Check, Employment Reference Check, Education/License Verification, and Driver's License Check.

Pay

$27.14 - $35.09 per hour; $56,668 - $73,267 annually.

Schedule

• Day Shift: 7 AM - 3:30 PM or Contractor's Hours.
• Days of Work: Monday - Friday.
• No travel required.
