Survey Technician - Intern

About the role

Whitman, Requardt & Associates, LLP (WRA) is looking for a field survey technician intern to perform instrument person duties on a field survey crew. The equipment used by WRA survey crews includes robotic total stations, GNSS rovers, electronic field controllers (data collectors), levels, and various hand tools necessary to perform measurements at project sites. WRA also has a 3-D terrestrial scanner available for certain surveys. The surveys performed may be for Land Development, Transportation, Government, Architecture, Environmental, and Infrastructure projects, including topographic, control, boundary, right of way, cross-section, construction stakeout, or terrestrial scanning depending on project needs. Field surveys may occur within Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia. Success in this position may present opportunities within the WRA Survey Department when vacancies or department growth occur.

Possible Training Opportunities

• Operate a robotic total station
• Operate GNSS survey equipment for base and rover RTK, network RTK, and Static GNSS occupations
• Operate a Carlson Data Collector
• Locate topographic features for mapping and contours
• Keep detailed field notes and sketches
• Maintenance and adjustment of survey equipment
• Operate 3D terrestrial scanner
• Perform computations

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship required
• High School Diploma or State Equivalent certification required
• Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred
• Ability to obtain security clearance
• Must be able to accommodate occasional overnight travel, or longer, typically on a weekly basis or less
• Must be physically able to carry equipment and supplies over uneven terrain

Physical Requirements (Essential Functions)

This position requires the ability to perform a variety of physical tasks in the field as part of the essential job functions. Duties may include:

• Walking and navigating across rough or uneven terrain such as mud, rocks, grass, dirt, steep hillsides, heavily wooded areas, and other unpaved surfaces
• Moving around active project sites, which may involve climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, or poles
• Performing physical activities such as bending, twisting, kneeling, and climbing
• Remaining in a stationary position—either standing or sitting—for extended periods of time
• Repetitive motions involving the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
• Lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds and/or carting objects up to 50 lbs. distances up to a 1/2 mile
• Driving to and from project sites, which may involve distances of up to or exceeding 100 miles round trip
• Functioning safely in an environment with potential risks, including high and low temperatures, precipitation, outdoor elements, noisy conditions, or confined/enclosed spaces

The expected hourly compensation range for this position is $15.00 - $21.00. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific compensation offered to a candidate may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s relevant knowledge, training, skills, work location, and/or experience.
