Survey Technician
Responsibilities
- Perform construction surveying and layout for heavy civil projects ranging from approximately $300,000 to $30 million in value.
- Apply knowledge of civil construction methods, utility installation, roadway construction, earthwork operations, and grade control to daily field work.
- Operate and support machine control platforms, including Trimble, Topcon, and Leica, to guide equipment and ensure accurate site work.
- Read, interpret, and verify civil plans, drawings, and digital models to translate design information into precise field layout.
- Use survey software and data management systems to collect, process, store, and maintain survey data and project records.
- Build and edit surface models for use in machine control, layout, and quantity verification.
- Conduct drone mapping and photogrammetry tasks to capture site conditions and generate accurate digital terrain models.
- Apply knowledge of FDOT and municipal construction tolerances to ensure that all work meets applicable standards and specifications.
- Communicate clearly with field crews, project teams, and supervisors to coordinate layout, resolve discrepancies, and address site challenges.
- Identify and troubleshoot issues in the field, using strong problem-solving skills to maintain accuracy and productivity.
- Work independently in onsite environments, managing daily tasks and priorities to meet project schedules.
- Affirmatively assist with general GPS and survey-related tasks as needed to support the survey department and project requirements.
Essential Skills
- At least 1 year of experience in heavy civil construction surveying and layout preferred.
- Solid understanding of civil construction methods, including utility installation, roadway construction, earthwork operations, and grade control.
- Hands-on experience with machine control platforms such as Trimble, Topcon, and Leica.
- Ability to read and interpret civil plans, drawings, and digital models.
- Proficiency with survey software and data management systems used for field data collection and processing.
- Strong communication skills for coordinating with field and project teams.
- Effective problem-solving abilities to address layout and site challenges.
- Ability to work independently in fast-paced field environments and manage multiple tasks.
- Experience building and editing surface models for construction applications.
- Drone mapping and photogrammetry experience for capturing and modeling site conditions.
- Knowledge of FDOT and municipal construction tolerances and standards.

Work Environment
- This is an onsite field-based role within a construction environment.
- The typical schedule is 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with occasional Saturday work as project needs require, for a total of approximately 50 to 60 hours per week.
- You will work closely with a survey department of three people within a company of around 150 team members.
- The work involves active construction sites, use of GPS and survey equipment, machine control platforms such as Trimble, Topcon, and Leica, and modern survey software and data management tools.
- The environment is fast-paced and hands-on, requiring readiness to work outdoors and collaborate with field crews while maintaining professionalism and safety.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tampa, FL.
Pay And Benefits
The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $28.00/hr.
