Position Summary

About the role

Supervise, assign, train, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for performing a variety of City surveying; ensure work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures and perform the more technical and complex tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

Essential Functions

  • Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review and participate in the work tasks and functions of staff responsible for performing a variety of City surveying methods including operating and maintaining a variety of survey equipment.
  • Serve as a member of a field survey crew and operate a variety of survey equipment.
  • Collect data in the field using RTK-GPS and Static-GPS methods and perform differential leveling using a high accuracy digital level.
  • Edit, analyze and enter data into Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases, using techniques such as coordinate geometry and keyboard entry of tabular data.
  • Assist with a variety of survey tasks to establish and maintain the City's horizontal and vertical control networks including site visits to passive monuments and installation and static observation of new monuments.
  • Record and maintain field notes, files and records of surveying activities.
  • Monitor traffic and safety control as needed while working on various projects.
  • Read, interpret and review maps, plats and construction/design plans.
  • May assist with website publication of datasheets including drafting maps, preparing attribute files and entering new data into attribute tables.
  • Load and unload surveying equipment, materials and supplies to provide safe transport and prevent loss or damage.
  • Establish schedules and methods for providing surveying services; identify resource needs; review work plans with appropriate management staff; allocate resources accordingly.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of goals and objectives; implement approved policies and procedures; and monitor work activities to ensure compliance with established goals and objectives.
  • Supervise the maintenance of the City's precise horizontal and vertical geodetic survey network.
  • Prepare and supervise the writing of descriptions and sketches related to surveying projects including operating computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  • Take notes, record data, and perform computations to ensure accuracy of field data; maintain and calibrate precise survey instruments, machines and equipment.
  • Perform calculations for topographic, boundary, geodetic and construction surveys; determine accurate locations and values of points, lines, areas and contours of the earth's surface or the built environment.
  • Evaluate and establish field procedures to obtain required standards of accuracy; oversee inventory of stations and equipment.
  • Participate in the selection of surveying staff; train lower level staff; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures.
  • Research necessary plats and benchmark information for assigned projects; verify plat, benchmark and plan information.
  • Prepare analytical and statistical reports on operations and activities.

Supplemental Functions

  • Update reference information and keep daily diary;
  • Prepare survey monument data sheets for publication as assigned.
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings;
  • Stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of surveying.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

  • Associate's degree from an accredited college, university, or technical/vocational school in field surveying, engineering, drafting, or GIS;
  • Five (5) years of field surveying experience;
  • To include one (1) year of supervisory or lead experience.
  • Professional Surveyor Intern Certification preferred.
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
  • Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Physical Requirements

  • Maintain physical condition necessary for walking, standing, or sitting for prolonged periods;
  • Repeated bending;
  • Operating motorized equipment and vehicles;
  • Lifting and carrying of survey equipment.
