Survey Crew Chief
Job Duties And Responsibilities
Under general supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, researching, and analyzing data from property/utility records, deeds, land/property titles, structural plans, and other land surveying activities.
Under general supervision, use survey instruments to perform various types of surveys on projects of varying complexity and/or scope, to include boundary, existing condition, topographic, as-built, subdivision, hydrographic, and profile maps.
Provide professional survey assistance that accounts for accurate survey data, and determines conformance with applicable rules, standards, codes, boundaries, and construction specifications.
Assist with survey activities for projects of varying scope and complexity within a region.
Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation related to site inspection and survey findings using photographs, sketches, calculations, software, spreadsheets, technical drawings, and reports.
Complete training on assigned tasks.
Work collaboratively with other professionals, engineers, scientists, technicians, and project administrators on assigned survey tasks.
Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, location data, statistical documentation, studies, surveys, and construction.
Remain current in the latest survey knowledge, techniques, and practices.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds and resources.
Adhere to standards of professional conduct and KLJ’s policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Associate’s degree in Surveying, Geospatial, or closely related discipline is preferred.
- 5 years of experience in surveying including topographic surveys, boundary surveys, property descriptions, easements, and right-of-way.
- Valid Driver’s License that does not include restrictions.
- Familiar with land survey principles, practices, processes, methods, and techniques.
- Familiar with relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
- Excellent research and evaluation skills with analytical mindset.
- Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.
- Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies.
- Able to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
- Proficiency with Trimble survey equipment (Survey grade GPS, Data collector, Robotic Total Station, Level, etc.).
- Able to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workday or week.
- Occasional travel may be required depending upon project specific needs.

- Use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
- Talk or hear and communicate clearly.
- The Employee Must Be able to walk on uneven terrain up to ten miles per day.
- Have the ability to work outdoors in the elements for the full day, year-round.
- Frequently lift and move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 75 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
