About the Role

The Surgical Technologist assists the surgeon during operative or other invasive procedures and ensures the integrity of the sterile field at all times, functioning under the supervision of the registered nurse.

Responsibilities

• Ensures the operating room and environment are ready prior to the patient entering the room.
• Verifies all necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment are available for the case.
• Consults and updates the surgeon’s preference card, reporting any irregularities to the circulating nurse.
• Confirms all instruments and equipment are in proper working condition before the procedure begins.
• Validates operating room humidity and temperature, reporting irregularities to the circulating nurse.
• Opens supplies using appropriate sterile technique to begin the procedure.
• Continuously validates the sterility of all products and instrumentation on the sterile field.
• Immediately communicates any break in sterility or irregularities in sterile packaging to the circulating nurse.
• Follows department policy for hand scrub, gowning, gloving, and draping prior to surgery.
• Sets up the sterile field in a standard manner, ensuring all items are visible during counts.
• Performs all counts per department policy.
• Assists in positioning and draping the patient according to department standards and surgeon’s preferences.
• Does not hand the surgeon instruments until after the "Time Out" is completed.
• Anticipates the surgeon’s needs during the procedure and passes appropriate instruments.
• Operates specialized technical equipment safely and efficiently, maintaining sterility.
• Accounts for all needles, sponges, instruments, and foreign bodies during the procedure.
• Properly handles, identifies, labels, and disposes of specimens according to hospital policy.
• Accepts medication onto the field only after validating the order, label, name, strength, and expiration date.
• Labels all medications and fluids on the field with correct name and strength.
• Assists with room turnover activities, including cleaning instruments and preparing them for CPD.
• Tags malfunctioning instruments and notifies CPD.
• Cleans medical equipment per manufacturer’s recommendations and returns it to storage.
• Tags non-functioning equipment, documents the issue, and moves it for Bio-med pickup.
• Returns unused supplies to proper locations and stocks supplies and linens as needed.
• Assists with cleaning the operating room and transporting patients.
• Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
• Supports the surgical team by updating skills and knowledge through in-services and education.
• Promotes teamwork and delivers quality patient care through the nursing process.

Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Program or a minimum of 15 years of experience as a surgical technologist in an acute care setting.
• Surgical Technologist certification is highly preferred.
• One year of experience as a Surgical Technologist in a hospital or surgery center setting is preferred.
• Experience in multiple surgical specialties is preferred.
• BLS/BCLS certification required.
• High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Skills

Working Conditions

• Work under stressful emotional and physical conditions.
• Required to take night and weekend call shifts in rotation with other Operating Room staff.
