About the role
The Surgical Technologist assists with nursing care and surgical services under the direct supervision of the registered nurse and physician/surgeon.
Responsibilities
- Utilizes quality aseptic technique when working in an unsterile or sterile role in the OR.
- Maintains a sterile field by monitoring technique of all persons in the OR.
- Performs sponge, instrument, and needle counts with the circulating RN following established guidelines.
- Gowns and gloves surgeons and positions equipment and instruments.
- Passes sterile instruments to the surgical team during a surgical procedure.
- Operates specialty equipment after receiving specific training.
- Assists with transportation and positioning of the patients.
- Prepares supplies and equipment for surgical procedure following preference cards.
- Performs equipment checks as assigned.
- Assists with sterilization and maintenance of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment.
- Maintains inventory; orders; and restocks supplies, instruments, and equipment.
- Removes out-of-date items and discards or reprocesses following established guidelines.
- Assists with the general cleaning duties of the department.
- Aids with clerical work, and record keeping duties including the gathering of indicator data such as frequency of events.
- Prepares and updates preference cards and instrument tray lists as directed.
- Aids in the proper recording of patient charges.
Qualifications
- Current Surgical Technologist Certification through one of the following boards: NBSTSA, NCCT, AAHA.
- Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
- Prior scrub experience preferred.
Skills and Abilities
- Follows strict sterile technique.
- Ability to set up operating room with instruments and supplies for scheduled cases and pass to and from surgeon during procedures.
- Knowledge of and adherence to strict aseptic and sterile techniques.
Physical Requirements
- Capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking.
- Ability to lift up to 40-pounds and push/pull heavy loaded carts up to 200 lbs.
- Possess visual, hearing, and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability.
- Ability to wear lead for extended periods of time.
Working Environment
- May be exposed to communicable diseases.
