About the role
The surgical technologist prepares the operating room for surgical cases across all specialties, instruments procedures, and anticipates the surgeon's needs. This role operates within MercyOne North Iowa Standards of Care, AORN Standards of Care and Practice, and Operating Room Policies and Procedures.
Responsibilities
- Assists the circulating nurse in assessing patient needs and developing/implementing the plan of care.
- Provides care to surgical patients in accordance with operating room performance standards, physician preference cards, and AORN Standards of Care and Practice.
- Assists in setting up operating rooms and securing safe patient transport when needed.
- Confirms surgical site correctness, prepares the pre-operative site, instruments the case, manages the sterile field and specimens, and turns over the room under the supervision of the circulating nurse.
- Serves as a steward for the hospital’s human and material resources, meeting productivity expectations.
- Identifies and updates accurate changes on surgeons' preference cards.
- Utilizes and maintains appropriate supplies during procedures and within the department.
- Develops and maintains knowledge/skills in all surgical specialties.
- Participates in specialty team call duties: 10-12 days per month with a 30-minute response time.
Requirements
- Graduate of a surgical technologist program or graduate of an LPN program with surgical experience.
- Certification as a surgical technologist required.
- LPN license required if graduate of an LPN program.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience functioning as a Surgical Tech.
- Proof of Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association or American Red Cross Professional Rescuer—LIVE class only) required prior to employment or within 60 days of hire.
- Proof of Mandatory Reporting for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training required prior to employment or within 6 months of hire (per State of Iowa guidelines).
