About the Role

The Cardiac Surgical Technologist (ST) functions as an integral member of a team of care providers in the Cardiac Operating Rooms of the Perioperative Services at the OSU Medical Center. The surgical teams reflect a culture of cooperation, enthusiasm, and mutual respect. The team—consisting of the Surgeon, Anesthesiologist, Patient Care Coordinator – Registered Nurse (PCC-RN), Surgical Technologist (ST), Student Surg Tech (SST), Perioperative Technician, Anesthesia Technician, and Office Assistants—provides patient care and supportive services aimed at maximizing patient care outcomes, improving customer service levels, reducing hospitalization length, and decreasing costs. Patients and their families experience the benefits of patient-focused care through the integrated skills of all team members.

The Cardiac ST performs technical skills related to intraoperative patient care, generally assigned to the scrub role in various surgical procedures, including Cardiac cases, and also performs routine unit tasks. They provide emergency care measures as appropriate, assist in meeting the patient’s emotional needs, follow universal precautions, safe handling guidelines, and all infection control standards, and ensure safety and security for self and others. The ST maintains a clean and organized perioperative unit, promotes a positive attitude, and upholds patient confidentiality.

This is an unclassified professional staff position working under the direct supervision of the PCC-RN and general supervision of Perioperative Managers. The ST performs tasks in a cost-effective manner without compromising quality of care, meets hospital continuing education and certification requirements, and contributes to organizational effectiveness while demonstrating career growth and development. Variable rotating shifts and rotating on-call assignments are required.

Responsibilities

• Perform technical skills related to intraoperative patient care, primarily in the scrub role for Cardiac and other surgical procedures.
• Provide emergency care measures and assist in meeting patients’ emotional needs.
• Follow universal precautions, safe handling guidelines, and infection control standards.
• Ensure safety and security for self, patients, and others, adhering to special precautions related to patient care.
• Maintain a clean and organized perioperative unit.
• Promote a positive attitude among staff, families, and patients while maintaining patient confidentiality.
• Perform routine unit tasks and contribute to cost-effective care without compromising quality.
• Uphold departmental goals and objectives, including continuing education and certification requirements.
• Demonstrate career growth and development while contributing to organizational effectiveness.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent (GED).
• Completion of a formal Surgical Technology Training Program.
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
• 1 year of relevant experience required; 2–4 years preferred.
• Previous experience in the Operating Room as a Surgical Technologist is preferred.
