SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST

About the Role

The surgical technologist serves as a member of the healthcare team and provides technical support to the surgeon, registered nurse, and anesthesiologist in the operating room. Assumes responsibilities in the perioperative area including scrubbing, assisting the RN circulator, setting up and breaking down surgical procedures, pulling and putting away supplies, equipment, and environmental service duties. Performs other duties as requested. Requires a high degree of responsibility, confidentiality, and discretion. Remains calm and effective in stressful situations and provides support in emergencies. Ensures safe, effective, and efficient patient care to achieve desired outcomes and optimal patient satisfaction. Able to prioritize, organize, multi-task, and take direction while demonstrating attention to accuracy and detail. Supports the organization’s mission and vision, promotes teamwork, and functions as a team member providing compassionate, collaborative, and trustworthy care.

Responsibilities

• Ensure proper supplies, equipment, and instruments are ready for use.
• Clean operating room between cases and restock to meet par levels.
• Assist other operating rooms for coverage and prepare cases for the next day.
• Operate sterilizer, lights, suction machine, and other designated equipment.
• Ensure patient, procedure, operative site, positioning, and equipment correspond.
• Know principles and methods of sterilization and perform hand scrub according to policy.
• Arrange instruments and supplies for surgical procedures and maintain instrument integrity.
• Ensure proper counting of sponges, instruments, and sharps.
• Assist in gowning personnel and draping the patient.
• Anticipate surgeon’s needs and pass instruments appropriately.
• Communicate needs to circulators to ensure efficient procedure progress.
• Prepare and preserve specimens and assist with anesthesia induction.
• Verify, label, and place medication on the surgical field.
• Clean and disinfect all tables, counter surfaces, stands, and floors.
• Help transport patients and restock the operating room.

Requirements

• Knowledge of surgical technologist policies and procedures in compliance with licensure and accreditation.
• Knowledge of suture technique, retracting, surgeon preferences, procedures, instrumentation, and equipment.
• Verbal, math, and reading skills to effectively communicate, count supplies, and read preference cards and charts.
• Demonstrate knowledge of age-specific criteria and competency in total joint and spine intraoperative nursing.
• Annual completion of specified mandatory in-services and six hours of total joint and spine specialty education.
• Ability to see, speak, and hear well enough to interact with all contacts, read materials, and monitor signals.
• Mobility to stand, walk, run, bend, stoop, pull, lift, and assist patients.
• Good eye/hand coordination and ability to push/pull carts, beds, and other equipment.
• Ability to work flexible hours, problem-solve, and stay calm under stress in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an approved school of Surgical Technology and certified by examination from the Association of Surgical Technologists.
• One year of current CST experience preferred in the OR setting.
• BLS certification.
• Annual completion of specified competencies and in-services.
