Surgical Technologist

About the Role

Surgical Technologists work under the supervision and delegatory authority of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures. They ensure the operating room environment is safe, equipment functions properly, and operative procedures are conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists are experts in asepsis and sterile technique, combining knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and tools to support physicians during invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Responsibilities

• Properly perform surgical scrub and don OR attire and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Assist team members with gowning, gloving, and draping to establish the sterile field.
• Gather, check, and open supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
• Aseptically set up instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions required for the procedure.
• Perform initial and subsequent instrument, sharps, and sponge counts per policy.
• Assist in transferring and positioning the patient, maintaining normothermia and patient comfort.
• Inspect and prepare skin for surgical procedures (e.g., hair removal by clippers, prepping the area).
• Actively participate in the time-out procedure.
• Sponge or suction the operative site.
• Prepare and cut suture material as directed by the surgeon.
• Measure and pass medications, hemostatic agents, and irrigation solutions during the procedure (transfer only, no administration).
• Assist in cauterizing methods and hold retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.
• Maintain continuity during post-operative care, including applying dressings and casts, and assisting in patient transfer.
• Prepare bone/tissue products (excluding ACL grafts).
• Properly handle and pass off specimens in accordance with policy.
• Operate sterilizers, adjust operating tables, and handle microscopes and other surgical equipment safely and effectively.
• Set up supplies, equipment, and instruments using aseptic technique.
• Perform tasks delegated by the R.N. Circulator, such as assisting anesthesia and complex procedures within scope of practice (e.g., placing urinary catheters with documented competency).
• Serve as a Second Surgical Technologist by assisting the surgeon and/or first assistant with additional technical tasks, such as:
  • Holding retractors or instruments as directed.
  • Sponging or suctioning the operative site.
  • Applying electrocautery to clamps or forceps on blood vessels.
  • Cutting suture material as directed.
  • Connecting drains to suction apparatus.
  • Applying dressings to closed wounds.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Completion of an approved accredited surgical technology program or military training.
• Three to five years of demonstrated experience in the field or profession preferred.
• Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist is preferred.
