Surgical Technologist 3

Responsibilities

• Properly equips, instruments, and supplies medical equipment for surgical procedures.
• Maintains a sterile setup/field at all times and adheres to sterile techniques.
• Anticipates and responds to assignments in a timely and efficient manner.
• Assists the circulating RN with patient preparation.
• Ensures proper sterilization of instruments using a working knowledge of autoclaves.
• Accurately counts and checks instrumentation before and during procedures.
• Collaborates with the surgeon by anticipating their needs and participating in departmental improvement activities.
• Provides assistance with patient positioning and follows AORN guidelines.
• Responds to overhead pages within 3 minutes and assists with clerical duties after hours.
• Volunteers to assist with emergency situations and trauma procedures.
• Coordinates with the OR educator and manager to deliver annual inservices on equipment, instrumentation, or surgical technique.
• Partners with various clinical programs to serve as a preceptor and mentor for clinical rotation students.
• Serves as a mentor and role model for new team members, assisting with annual competency assessments.
• Participates in the development and revision of unit-specific policies and SOPs.

Qualifications

• Five years of experience as a Surgical Technologist.
• Graduate of a Surgical Technologist training program (one year of experience can substitute).
• Subject matter expert in a surgical subspecialty.
• Serves as a leader within the department by providing in-services/education and participating in performance improvement projects/initiatives.
• BLS Certification and CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) required.
