Surgical Technician - Operating Room - Full Time

About the role

The role involves performing various duties in surgical procedures under the supervision of an RN, adhering to GCMC's Compliance Standards, and keeping up-to-date with relevant regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates and follows recommended practices for surgical attire.
  • Maintains healthy skin and fingernail condition and follows standard practice regarding jewelry in the perioperative setting.
  • Communicates any surgical preference changes as they arise for preference card revision requests.
  • Works to ensure patient safety is maintained in all aspects of patient care.
  • Provides evidence of one year of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility within the last four years, or service in the federal government with related duties, or holds an LPN license with at least one year of clinical experience as an LPN.
  • Completes responsibilities within scope of practice as delegated, including participating in Universal Protocol Time out, communicating changes, recognizing changes in patient condition, and reporting concerns.
  • Administers medications, IV fluids, and blood products safely and completes documentation in accordance with nursing policy.
  • Assists surgeons in noninvasive prepping of the skin’s surface and draping of patient for surgery, holding retractors, and engaging in activities to maintain homeostasis during a surgical procedure.
  • Uses hospital and unit specific equipment per policy, cleans and processes equipment, and demonstrates knowledge of procedures for obtaining supplies and equipment before and during cases.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge and understanding of emergency preparedness plans and operations.
  • Promotes professional nursing through participation in PI/QI, customer satisfaction, community involvement, committee activities, and nursing continuing education.
  • Participates in learning experiences for orientees, nursing and ancillary staff, and students by serving as a preceptor, and attends at least 75% of all staff meetings and at least 1 clinical update and all mandatory in-services.
  • Affirms safe patient handoff through effective communication of the treatment status of each patient.

Requirements

Education, License & Cert: High School Diploma or Equivalent, Graduate of Surgical Technology program, Current BLS-CPR certification required, Certification in Surgical Technology.

Experience: 1. One year of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility within the last four years; 2. Service in the federal government with related duties; 3. LPN license with at least one year of clinical experience as an LPN.
