About the Role

Assists surgeons with exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions to ensure safe operations with optimal patient results. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, attends to patients’ direct care needs and maintains compliance with hospital policies.

  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon and surgical team for specific procedures
  • Maintains dexterity sufficient to perform assistant duties effectively
  • Upholds a professional attitude regarding patient dignity, privacy, and safety
  • Functions within the scope of practice defined by medical staff bylaws, rules, regulations, and state law

Responsibilities

  • Assist surgeons with technical functions during operations, including exposure and hemostasis
  • Provide direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse
  • Maintain compliance with hospital policies and procedures
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team for specific procedures
  • Demonstrate and maintain dexterity required for surgical assisting duties
  • Uphold patient dignity, privacy, and safety
  • Operate within the defined scope of practice and applicable state laws

Requirements

  • Technical School, 2 Years College, or Associate’s Degree in Surgical Technology (or board-eligible program for SFA certification)
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Three to five (3-5) years of surgical tech experience required; five to eight (5-8) years preferred
  • Current CSFA (NBSTSA), CSA (NSAA), or SA-C (ABSA) certification required; must be maintained for employment
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate patient care
