About the role

The Surgical Technician is a member of the surgical team and provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technician participates with the surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team.

Responsibilities

  • Use instruments in basic surgical procedures
  • Operate and monitor commonly used equipment performing simple surgical cases
  • Understand and follow protocols for handling various specimens
  • Aid in training staff in the operation of equipment
  • Provide transportation of patients to and from the surgical/operating room
  • Discuss each procedure with surgical professionals

Requirements

  • Specialized experience: Experience using instruments in basic surgical procedures, operating and monitoring commonly used equipment performing simple surgical cases, understanding and following protocols for handling various specimens, assisting in training staff in the operation of equipment, providing transportation of patients to and from the surgical/operating room, discussing each procedure with surgical professionals.
  • Education: A 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation, if required.
  • Combination: Education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree.

Qualifications

  • GS-5: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
  • GS-6: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
  • GS-7: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Skills

  • Handle the instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures to include extremely complex procedures independently
  • Plan and discuss each procedure with surgical professionals, including "Time-out" procedures
  • Manage assignments of above average level complexity
  • Develop techniques and skills in the position over time and make recommendations for improvement of processes and/or procedures

  • Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:00pm (with call expectations to include off-hours, weekends, and holidays)
