About the Role

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Perioperative Services and the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist fills the surgical scrub role on all types of minor and major surgical procedures, dependent on individual competencies in each surgical specialty. Assists physicians and nurses in various medical and technical procedures in compliance with the hospital's philosophy, standards of practice, and governing regulations.

Responsibilities

• Decision-making concerning equipment and/or instrumentation sterilization and biohazardous waste disposal
• Housekeeping duties and patient care and flow
• Compliance with hospital practice standards regarding competent performance duties
• Maintenance of patient confidentiality and creation of a safe surgical environment
• Safe use of medical equipment and implementation of medical and surgical asepsis principles
• Provision of physical safety for the patient, including accounting for sponges, needles, instruments, and other potential foreign bodies
• Support of other hospital personnel in the performance of their duties
• Assistance to surgeons in scrubbed cases and preparation of supplies for upcoming cases
• Demonstration of a cooperative work attitude toward coworkers, employees, management, patients, visitors, and physicians
• Maintenance of a safe work environment in compliance with OSHA guidelines and infection control standards
• Knowledge of instrument processing from decontamination to storage of sterile packages
• Inspection of room cleanliness, availability of supplies, and equipment for assigned cases at the start of each day
• Utilization of surgeon preference cards to select packs, supplies, and instruments
• Performance of surgical hand scrub and donning of sterile gown and gloves according to policy
• Maintenance of proper sterile technique when gowning and gloving surgeons and draping patients
• Performance of sponge, instrument, and needle counts according to count policy
• Handling of specimens per established policy
• Transport of instruments to decontamination area using appropriate techniques and compliance with policies
• Restocking of operating rooms to established PAR levels and putting away unused sterile supplies and instruments
• Adherence to attendance, punctuality, meal, and break time policies
• Completion of work in an acceptable time frame and independent manner
• Demonstration of a positive "can-do" attitude and willingness to adjust personal schedule as needed
• Attendance at 100% of department meetings or documentation of review of materials presented
• Functioning as a team member following department and hospital rules of engagement
• Communication of necessary information about customers or employees for hospital-related business
• Adherence to strict confidentiality in dealing with patients, families, hospital personnel, and the public
• Proactive attitude toward problem resolution and anticipation of customers' needs
• Modeling of core values to coworkers continuously
• Following of hospital and departmental safety policies and procedures
• Reporting of unsafe situations to supervisor
• Adherence to hospital and departmental dress code and wearing of name badge at all times
• Demonstration of knowledge of hospital-wide emergency management codes and plans
• Participation in hospital performance improvement, infection control, and risk management programs
• Demonstration of cultural, spiritual, and age-related considerations when interacting with patients

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent required
• Certification as a Surgical Technologist required
• Two years of previous experience as an operating room technician desired
• Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification
