About the role
The Surgical Technologist (ST) performs technical functions to assist in the delivery of patient care within the Operating Room or other areas of the hospital as assigned. The ST provides assistance to other health care providers such as Registered Nurses, anesthesia staff, surgeons, and other professionals.
The primary role of the ST is to perform in the ‘scrub’ role during surgical procedures and to ensure availability of all sterile supplies, instrumentation, and equipment. Additionally, the ST provides orientation and training to new team members, participates in very complex cases, and is responsible for driving performance improvement (PI) projects to completion.
Responsibilities
- Perform technical functions to assist in patient care within the Operating Room or other assigned areas.
- Assist healthcare providers including Registered Nurses, anesthesia staff, surgeons, and other professionals.
- Act in the ‘scrub’ role during surgical procedures.
- Ensure availability of sterile supplies, instrumentation, and equipment.
- Provide orientation and training to new team members.
- Participate in complex surgical cases.
- Drive performance improvement (PI) projects to completion.
Requirements
- Current CPR certification.
- Certified as a Surgical Technologist under the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist (CST) by graduating from a CAAHEP-accredited program and passing a national certification examination, or certification under the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
Qualifications
Minimum Level of Education Required: High School Diploma/GED or equivalent.
Preferred educational qualifications:
- Diploma or Associate’s Degree in Surgical Technology.
- Military training in Surgical Technology.
- 5 or more years of experience without a degree.
