About the role

Engages in safety culture with active participation in regulatory requirements and patient safety huddles. Facilitates learning by assisting with peer, orientee, and student learning experiences. Actively works with department leadership and council representatives to identify, share, implement and evaluate safety best practices. Supports the leadership in efforts of the department and CCHMC and serves as a mentor and resources to others. Provides leadership in improving upon the competence of staff.

Responsibilities

  • Personally accountable for providing patient and employee safety at all times.
    • Utilizes safe practices and procedures in surgical patient care.
    • Aids co-workers in resolving and improving upon active and potential patient and employee safety issues.
    • Reviews surgery plan and appropriately prepares for procedure based on expert knowledge.
    • Contacts Perioperative Coordinators and/or Lead Certified Surgical Technologist if additions and/or changes need to be made.
    • Identifies ideas to improve upon surgery plan and acts as a resource for clarity about the plan as needed.
    • Demonstrates understanding of expert technical skills required to provide care to patients and families and the ability to effectively perform the skills.
    • Proficient in advanced surgical technique, procedures, and instrumentation.
    • Independently scrubs surgical procedures in all surgical specialties and serves as a resource to coworkers and other OR staff.
    • Demonstrates ability to anticipate and address problems in relation to the procedure being performed.
    • Demonstrates the ability to make appropriate decisions, prioritize planned and unplanned events.
    • Acts as a resource for anticipating the needs of the surgical team when providing patient care.
    • Focuses on cost effective provision of supplies and equipment to facilitate patient care with positive outcomes.
    • Contributes to improvement opportunities for cost effective care.
    • Participates in training programs to attain and maintain competency in complex cases and procedures.
    • Works with Educator Specialists within department to assist in education coordination and precepting of a Surgical Technologists.
    • Monitors equipment to ensure compliance with instructions for use and appropriate action taken.
    • Applies superior knowledge of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and pharmacology / Specialty of whole organ transplantation, vascular system/structures for optimum surgical patient care.
    • Applies expert knowledge related to emergency situations and surgical procedures.
    • Uses shared decision making; Engages in multidisciplinary team process, actively participating in effective problem solving, collegial learning and pursuit of best practice.
    • Promotes collaborative behavior in team members.
    • Mentors others to respect the contribution of the entire team.
    • Uses diversity resources available both internally and in the community to enhance the experience of care for the diverse patient populations.
    • Incorporates differences, including alternative therapies into care; tailors care to the extent possible.
    • Demonstrates efforts to grow self and others in cultural competence.
    • Successfully completed the orientation process in assigned surgical department.
    • Demonstrates expert knowledge and practice of patient care surgical procedure concepts as a certified surgical technologist.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in surgical technology from an Allied Health Education Program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) OR Associate degree in surgical technology from a program accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education School (ABHES) OR Formal military training in surgical technology from the Army, Navy, or Air Force (68D Surgical Technology Training [Army], Hospital Corpsman [Navy], Surgical Services Specialist [Air Force]).
  • 5+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.
  • Completed minimum of 5 years in specialty (CTOR, Transplant, Fetal).
  • Preferred: Employed by a CCHMC perioperative department 2+ years.
  • Maintains certification by participating in continuing education activities.
  • Mets the criteria stated in level I & II.
