Surgical Support Supervisor

About the role

The Surgical Support Supervisor coordinates and directs the actions of assigned surgical support technicians in the Operating Room. This position assists in the training, management, and evaluation of the surgical support team, collaborating with leadership and anesthesia providers to develop and maintain current standards of practice and care within the Operating Room environment.

Responsibilities

• Collaborates with Educator and Anesthesia providers to develop and maintain orientation, ongoing education, and training for the surgical support technician team.
• Leads assigned staff in training and competency development for specific skills, serving as a resource to promote knowledge and communication.
• Corrects observed deviations from expected job performance, behaviors, and standards of care, or reports them to leadership if beyond scope of authority.
• Provides timely performance feedback and evaluation documentation to assigned staff.
• Develops and initiates processes to promote safe and effective care in the O.R.
• Participates in departmental quality and performance improvement projects and advocates for continuously effective staff workflow.
• Assigns, coordinates, and supervises tasks to promote a productive workflow.
• Assists anesthesia with IV starts, induction, intubation, extubation, and other technical procedures as needed under the supervision of anesthesia providers.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum 1 year of previous healthcare experience required.
• BLS certification required.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of medical terminology and patient care procedures related to anesthesia, electrocardiograms, airway support devices, peripheral line access devices, pressure waveforms, and cardiovascular monitoring technical procedures.
• Preferred: Licensed Practical Nurse, EMT, or Paramedic certification.
• Preferred: 1+ year of previous pediatric and/or cardiac health-related experience.
• Preferred: 1+ year of previous leadership experience.

Working Conditions

• Surgical areas work environment with occasional exposure to unpleasant odors from disinfectant solutions/chemicals.
• Frequent exposure to infectious agents when cleaning equipment and handling needles.
• Potential for personal harm or injury is reduced when proper safety and health precautions are followed.
• Normal operating room environment with some exposure to excessive noise and increased temperature.
