Assists the surgery team with direct and indirect patient care activities, including sterile procedure setup.
Responsibilities
- Assists in maintaining a safe and orderly patient care environment in surgery, adhering to established policy.
- Demonstrates competency and knowledge in performing specified skills, including transporting and activities that occur in a sterile environment.
- Demonstrates competency in utilization of specified equipment required for patient care, including but not limited to, cleaning and assembling instrument trays and operating the autoclave.
- Assists with supplying OR suites with stock items; supplies blanket/fluid warmer; runs errands that support patient care activity.
- Assists with room turnover by performing activities such as sweeping, mopping, removing trash, and disinfecting as appropriate.
- Responds to real or simulated emergency and disaster situations according to established procedure.
- Assumes responsibility for obtaining current, accurate information and expanding knowledge base through utilization of appropriate learning experiences and attending mandatory annual in-services.
- Demonstrates organizational skills and appropriately prioritizes assigned work responsibilities.
- Communicates effectively and reports relevant observations of patient status to responsible Registered Nurse and follows through as directed.
- Respects patient rights by providing privacy and confidentiality of information.
- Participates in performance improvement activities.
- Provides for the age-specific needs of the population served according to department standards, as evidenced by observation, documentation, and peer feedback:
- Infant - Any child up to one year
- Pediatric - One year to 12 years
- Adolescence - 13 - 17 years
- Adult - 18-64 years
- Geriatric - 65 years and older
- Performs other related duties as required and directed.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- BLS issued by American Heart Association or Red Cross Certification
Qualifications
- Previous Operating Room experience (preferred)
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in a patient care area
Skills
- Demonstrable knowledge of medical terminology and asepsis and conduct in a sterile environment
- Affective verbal and written communication skills
