Responsibilities
- Preoperative Duties:
- Donning OR attire and PPE.
- Gathering, checking, and opening supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure.
- Surgical scrub, gowning, and gloving.
- Setting up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions.
- Performing initial instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with the circulator.
- Assisting the team members with gowning and gloving.
- Assisting with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
- Participating in the surgical site and patient verification during the time-out procedure.
- Securing tubing, cords, and other sterile accessories.
- Maintaining the sterile field and reporting any contamination.
- Intraoperative Duties:
- Preparing and anticipating additional instrumentation, equipment, and supplies for usage during the procedure.
- Passing instruments and supplies to the surgeon during the procedure.
- Labeling, measuring, and passing medications, hemostatic agents, and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure.
- Holding retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.
- Sponging or suctioning the operative site.
- Applying electrocautery to clamps or forceps on bleeders.
- Cutting suture material as directed by the surgeon.
- Coordinating the camera or changing out robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic surgery as directed by the surgeon.
- Maintaining the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
- Performing additional counts as necessary.
- Preparing sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices.
- Preparing and passing off specimen(s) as appropriate.
- Cleaning and preparing instruments for terminal sterilization.
- Aiding other members of the team with terminal cleaning of the room.
- Aiding in prepping the OR for the next patient.
- Participating in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.
- Postoperative Duties:
- When SPD is unavailable, decontaminating instruments/equipment.
- Aiding in post-procedure cleaning of the operative or other invasive procedure room and preparing rooms for subsequent patients.
- Other Duties:
- Maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.
- Participate in ongoing educational and competency verification activities applicable to scrub person activities.
- Aid with stocking chores.
Qualifications
- Education: Associate degree or National Certification.
- Licenses/ Certifications/ Registrations: None required.
- Experience: None required.
- Other: 6 months’ clinical experience preferred.
