About the role
The Surgical First Assistant facilitates a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures under the supervision of the surgical physician and registered nurse. This position requires an understanding of anatomy & physiology, surgical procedures, implementation of tools, and principles of aseptic technique.
Responsibilities
- Integrate an understanding of anatomy & physiology, surgical procedures, implementation of tools & principles of aseptic technique, while under the supervision of the surgical physician and registered nurse.
- Facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
- Aid in exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions that will help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.
- Maintain the sterile field while anticipating the needs of the surgeon.
- Function as first assistant to surgeon.
Requirements
- Current Certification for Surgical First Assistant (SFA) required.
- Current CPR certification.
- 3-5 years related experience is strongly preferred.
Qualifications
- Ability to read and comprehend detailed instructions, correspondence and memos.
- Ability to write simple and complex correspondence.
- Flexible in work schedule, assignments, and work load.
- Understand and follow the policies and procedures of South Georgia Medical Center and regulatory agencies’ standards and rules.
- Assist in the orientation and training of Surgical Services staff as needed.
Skills
- Knowledge of anatomy & physiology.
- Understanding of surgical procedures.
- Implementation of tools and principles of aseptic technique.
- Ability to maintain sterile field.
- Ability to anticipate surgeon's needs.
- Ability to function as first assistant to surgeon.
