Job Summary

As a member of the Subregional IntraOperative Neuro Monitoring (IONM) Service, this role involves mapping and monitoring neurosurgical and orthopedic spine cases, interpreting neurophysiological data, and supporting the Oversight Neurologist and Surgeons in Quality Assurance and advancing the field of IONM.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Performs multi-modality neuromonitoring and instantaneous interpretation of neurophysiological data to provide surgeons with immediate feedback and warnings.
  • Participates in preoperative planning and selects appropriate monitoring techniques, including evoked potentials, electromyography, cranial nerve stimulation, and pedicle screw stimulation.
  • Maintains Cadwell Monitoring System and customizes Cascade Elite software programs.
  • Shares expert knowledge of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and neuromonitoring with OR staff.
  • Works collaboratively with Oversight Neurologist, Neurosurgeons, and Orthopedic Spine Surgeons to develop IONM protocols.
  • Trains and assigns cases to new staff, troubleshoots technical issues, and leads the IONM team.
  • Assists the Oversight Neurologist in Quality Assurance, Quality Improvement, Performance Improvement, and data analysis.
  • Identifies and implements strategies for improving efficiency and reducing costs.
  • Conducts ongoing research and contributes to the expansion of the body of scientific knowledge in the field of IONM.
  • Evaluates and disseminates research findings to support or change standards of care.

Experience

  • Minimum four (4) years of experience in IONM.
  • Ph.D./Doctoral degree in a physical science, life science, or clinical allied health profession, or Masters degree with D.ABNM certification before January 2010.
  • American Board of Neurophysiologic Monitoring Certification preferred.

Education

  • Ph.D. in neuroscience, neurophysiology, neurobiology, neurochemistry, or applied physics preferred.

Secondary Functions

  • Covers IONM cases at Redwood City, Oakland, and Santa Clara Medical Centers with variable hours.

Additional Requirements

  • Effective inter-personal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
