Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM) Specialist

About the Role

The IONM Technologist prepares patients and conducts routine outpatient and inpatient IONM procedures; collects data pertinent to the interpretation of test results and assists medical staff with complex recordings. The IONM Specialist 1 works independently performing principal duties and responsibilities, monitoring basic neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery where neural structures are at risk, such as aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, brain and spine tumors, and spinal fusions. The technologist demonstrates willingness to learn new skills and advance their intraoperative neuromonitoring and patient care techniques.

Responsibilities

• Documents a comprehensive patient history including neurological symptoms and medications.
• Performs procedures appropriate to their competence, including test setup, electrode application, and maintaining patient safety.
• Maintains clean testing equipment, sanitizes supplies and surrounding area, and reports equipment malfunctions in writing.
• Performs advanced tests; prepares reports of recordings for physician interpretation; edits, types, archives, and stores files according to lab policy.
• Communicates effectively with patients to explain test purposes and answer questions, as well as with higher-level personnel.
• Troubleshoots common artifacts and protocols while maintaining safety standards.

Requirements

• Three years of experience in the neurodiagnostic field, including one year in their specialty modality.
• Bachelor’s Degree OR Associate’s Degree from an accredited Allied Health Neurodiagnostic Education Program (CAAHEP) OR 2 years’ experience as an internal END Tech.
• BLS certification.
• Certification in Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring (CNIM) from ABRET and/or D.ABNM.

Skills

• Familiarity with in-house monitoring equipment.
• Ability to perform basic spine and craniotomy cases.
• Ability to interpret intraoperative EP, EMG, and EEG independently or under indirect supervision.
• Computer literacy.
• Attention to detail, vigilance, and composure in stressful situations.
• Ability to troubleshoot common monitoring problems.
• Clear, concise written documentation and interpersonal communication skills.
• Knowledge of current techniques and regulatory standards.
• Promotes a cooperative working relationship with physicians and other disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

• HRC, DCH, and KPV certifications.
• Experience with possible exposure to human tissue/fluids and direct patient contact.
