About the Role

Under general supervision of a supervising neurophysiologist and lab manager, the Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM) Technologist/Senior Technologist works under the direction of the physician neurophysiologist and other physicians in the hospital during complex and specialized surgical procedures, monitoring the nervous system to reduce or avoid complications. Responsibilities include performing recording and monitoring in a variety of cases such as brain and brainstem procedures (e.g., for tumors including language and motor brain mapping), orthopedic spine procedures (e.g., for scoliosis), and vascular surgery (e.g., for aneurysms). The role involves aiding in patient preparation, conducting IONM to protect the nervous system, and following up to ensure quality of care.

Additionally, the Senior IONM Technologist may provide support to inpatient EEG service for EEG and other evoked potentials, train entry-level technologists, serve as lead, assist in program operations and scheduling, and perform other duties as assigned. All performance expectations are to be performed at an expert level.

Responsibilities

  • Perform intraoperative neuromonitoring during complex and specialized surgical procedures.
  • Monitor the nervous system to reduce or avoid surgical complications in brain, brainstem, spine, and vascular surgeries.
  • Aid in patient preparation and conduct follow-up to ensure quality of care.
  • Conduct multimodal monitoring in complex spine, brain/brainstem, and vascular surgeries.
  • Demonstrate competency in EEG, live EMG, triggered EMG for neural element stimulation, SSEP, tcMEP, T04, and AEP for all patients.
  • Operate and program related equipment (e.g., Cadwell).
  • For Senior IONM Technologist: Support inpatient EEG service, train entry-level technologists, serve as lead, and assist in program operations and scheduling.

Requirements

  • ABRET CNIM qualification acquired within two years of hire (required at time of hire for Sr. IONM Technologist).
  • BART or BLS certification at time of hire, with commitment to obtain BART within six months.
  • Two years of experience in surgical neurophysiology at the CNIM level (four to six years in a tertiary hospital care setting required for Sr. IONM Technologist).
  • Competence in neurological measurement techniques before, during, and after surgery.
  • Meet one of the following educational requirements:
    • CAAHEP Diploma, or
    • Current R. EEG T or R. EP T certification, or
    • Bachelor’s Degree (higher degree acceptable), or
    • Certificate of completion from an ABRET-recognized program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BA/BS, MS, PhD, or other allied health degree or certification.
  • DABNM, REEG, or REPT certifications.
  • Advanced capabilities including:
    • Electrocorticography (ECoG) with strips/grids.
    • Central sulcus localization.
    • Stimulation protocols for brain mapping (awake language and awake/asleep motor, including continuous intracranial MEPs).
    • DBS neurophysiology.
    • Peripheral nerve evaluations, including ephaptic response.
    • Brainstem/spinal cord stimulation/mapping.

Special Conditions

  • Must be able to work various hours, locations, and on-call evenings, weekends, and holidays based on business needs.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Pay

The pay scale for the IONM Technologist is $63.04–$78.43/hour. The pay scale for the Sr. IONM Technologist is $68.89–$85.64/hour.

Annual Full Pay Range: $131,628 – $163,762 (prorated if appointment percentage is less than 100%). Factors determining compensation include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, certifications, and organizational needs.

Schedule

  • Days, 10-hour shifts, Sunday–Saturday.
