Surface Mobile Mechanic

About the role

The Surface Mobile Mechanic position is based at the Kensington mine, which is 45 miles north of Juneau, accessible only via company transportation. The schedule is 14 days on and 14 days off, with no day-tripping allowed.

Responsibilities

• Safety and Compliance
• Stop work for safety concerns and adhere to safety best practices, policies, and procedures.
• Pre-shift inspection of work areas and equipment.
• Comply with company policies including attendance, safety, environmental, and HR policies.
• Understand and comply with Environment, Health, Safety, and Social Responsibility Policies.
• Protect the environment and personal safety, and ensure safety of others.
• Maintenance and Repair
• Maintain and repair surface and/or underground mobile mining equipment such as drills, bolters, loaders, haul trucks, and heavy and light-duty support equipment.
• Perform proper troubleshooting and repairs to maintain equipment availability.
• Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical components of mobile mining equipment.
• Intermediate welding and fabrication skills.
• Diesel and gas engine troubleshooting and repair skills.
• Perform in-depth preventive maintenance (PMs) to identify and resolve issues before they lead to equipment breakdowns.
• Documentation and Communication
• Enter hours into work orders daily.
• Enter service and repair notes to work orders daily.
• Maintain accurate documentation of all maintenance activities.
• Communicate equipment status and repair needs with supervisors and team members.
• Additional Responsibilities
• Monitor equipment performance and report anomalies promptly.
• Aid in training new technicians on standard procedures and safety protocols.
• Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications & Skills

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certification/degree in Heavy Equipment Mechanical Maintenance for a vocational tech school or equivalent work history.

• Excellent safety, attendance, and work records.
• Own hand tools.

Physical Demands

• Safe performance of maintenance and repair work in both surface and underground mining environments.
• Frequent standing, walking, and maneuvering on uneven, slippery, rocky, or confined surfaces both underground and on the surface.
• Frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds.
• Working outdoors in a wide range of environmental conditions, including rain, snow, ice, wind, cold temperatures, and periods of limited daylight.
• Working in underground and surface mining environments, including maintenance shops, underground drifts, PM bays, fabrication shops, active mining areas, and equipment operating zones.
• Work areas may vary significantly in temperature, ventilation, moisture, noise levels, and ground conditions.
• Performing physically demanding tasks including bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, twisting, and working in confined spaces for extended periods.
• Operating hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and mobile maintenance equipment while maintaining physical coordination and dexterity.
• Wearing and properly utilizing all required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respiratory protection when applicable, and working safely in varying environmental conditions.
• Participating in emergency response, mine rescue support activities as required, and evacuation procedures in accordance with site safety standards.

Work Environment

• Frequent exposure to underground work environments; outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions; extreme cold, extreme heat, potentially hazardous wildlife; moving mechanical parts; work at heights; fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; explosives and vibration.
• The noise level in most work environments is usually very loud.
• This position may require work on nights, weekends and rotating shifts; shift schedules require residency in camp during work rotations.

Mine Site Information

The Kensington Mine is located within the historic Berners Bay Mining District, a region with deep mining roots dating back over a century. The mine site is a remote camp located approximately 45 miles outside of Juneau, Alaska. Transportation to and from the mine site happens twice per day (once in the morning and once in the afternoon) and takes approximately 1.5 hours each way. Food and housing are provided on-site to employees. Rooms are dormitory style with two twin beds, a TV, and storage for personal belongings.
