Position Summary

Responsible for the coordination of the operational activities of all aspects of the daily unit work of an underground coal mine to insure the safe, economical and efficient operation of the operating area. Supervises, leads and trains a group of equipment operators and support staff personnel in the most effective and efficient methods in safely operating underground mining equipment, the loading and transporting of raw coals to the surface, while observing roof control and ventilation. Co-ordinates with other mine management to minimize equipment downtime and maximize mine production.

Implement and ensure that all employees working under your authority are knowledgeable in Risk Management techniques and following the SLAM process for all work assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise production and setup employees and perform mining functions in an underground coal mine.
  • Conduct proper examinations as required by State, Federal and Mine policy.
  • Direct supervision and coaching of employees for effective performance management.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience performing underground coal mining tasks.
  • Required Skills and Expertise: Good verbal and written communications skills. Ability to operate computer programs required for time and attendance, safety reporting, daily production data, and other necessary information.
  • Required License/Certification/Registration: Mine examiner, mine manager, or foreman certification is required. Must have respirable dust sampling certification or have the ability to obtain such certification.

Qualifications

  • Physical Requirements - Underground Environment: Must have the ability to stand for prolonged periods of time on uneven, rocky surfaces for up to the entire length of the shift. Must have the ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles. Must have the ability to walk for up to 4 hours at a time. Will be required to walk through different sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and headroom. Must have the ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA. Must have the ability to bend or stoop for a full work period as a result of mine height. Must have the ability to climb up and down stairs/steps and climb on and off equipment and ladders. Must have the ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have rapid reflex movements of the arms and legs as well as good hand to eye coordination. Must have the ability to lift 25 to 50 lbs on a frequent basis and the ability to occasionally lift items weighing up to 80 lbs. Must have the ability to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, water varying levels of noise from low to high decibels, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.
  • The job requires that you be able to work various shifts (required shifts include days, evenings and nights with rotating schedules, weekends, and holidays).
