Location: Francisco, IN 47649 – Underground coal mine operations

About the role

Responsible for coordinating the operational activities of all aspects of the daily unit work of an underground coal mine to ensure the safe, economical, and efficient operation of the operating area. Supervises, leads, and trains a group of equipment operators and support staff in the most effective and efficient methods for safely operating underground mining equipment, loading and transporting raw coal to the surface, while observing roof control and ventilation. Coordinates with other mine management to minimize equipment downtime and maximize mine production.

• Periodically assess performance against targets for each person, provide feedback, and ensure understanding of consequences for violating Life Saving Rules.
• Lead the development of appropriate Risk Management tools and processes for work teams in your area of responsibility.
• Take action to manage identified risks to an acceptable level before major projects or changes to equipment/procedures are implemented.
• Provide necessary time, knowledge, and resources for personnel to successfully complete their safety and health responsibilities.
• Implement and ensure all employees under your authority are knowledgeable in Risk Management techniques and follow the SLAM process for all work assignments.

Responsibilities

• Supervise production and setup employees and perform mining functions in an underground coal mine.
• Conduct proper examinations as required by State, Federal, and Mine policy.
• Direct supervision and coaching of employees for effective performance management.

Requirements

• Minimum of 4 years’ experience performing underground coal mining tasks.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to operate computer programs for time and attendance, safety reporting, daily production data, and other necessary information.
• Mine examiner, mine manager, or foreman certification is required.
• Respirable dust sampling certification or ability to obtain such certification.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand for prolonged periods on uneven, rocky surfaces for up to the entire length of the shift.
• Ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles.
• Ability to walk for up to 4 hours at a time through varying mine sections with different clearance and headroom.
• Ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as mandated by Company and MSHA.
• Ability to bend or stoop for a full work period due to mine height.
• Ability to climb up and down stairs/steps and on/off equipment and ladders.
• Ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), with rapid reflex movements of arms and legs, and good hand-to-eye coordination.
• Ability to lift 25 to 50 lbs frequently and occasionally lift items weighing up to 80 lbs.
• Ability to work in extreme conditions, including changing weather, dust, mud, water, varying noise levels (low to high decibels), varying light conditions, confined work areas, and around artificial light.
• Ability to work various shifts, including days, evenings, nights, rotating schedules, weekends, and holidays.

Safety-Sensitive Role Requirements

This is a safety-sensitive role. Individuals in such roles cannot have:

• An uncontrolled condition likely to cause loss of consciousness or ability to control a motor vehicle or large machinery.
• Uncontrolled respiratory or cardiac dysfunction likely to interfere with operating a motor vehicle or large machinery.
• A current clinical diagnosis of high blood pressure likely to interfere with operating a motor vehicle or large machinery.
• A current or unregulated mental or psychiatric disorder likely to interfere with driving a motor vehicle or large machinery.
• Impaired hearing (with or without hearing aids) that prevents hearing crucial safety information or alarms.
• Impaired vision below the minimum requirements of at least 20/40 acuity (Snellen) with or without correction and at least 70° field of vision in the horizontal meridian.
